Enhancing Vineyard Health with New Methods for Detecting Grey Mould

Grey mould may be hidden, but its impact is visible through reduced yields and compromised quality. In the latest episode of “Grower, Maker, Researcher – Wine Industry Insights,” experts discuss innovative detection methods that could save your vineyard.

In the episode, Professor Chris Steele from Charles Sturt University discusses the latest advancements in detecting and managing grey mould in grapes. The podcast delves into the challenges posed by this pervasive fungus and explores alternative diagnostic methods that can provide more accurate and timely information on Botrytis presence and amount.

Grey mould, caused by Botrytis cinerea, is a major concern for grape growers due to its ability to remain hidden within grape bunches. In this insightful podcast, Professor Steele explains why traditional visual inspections often fail to detect the fungus, leading to significant crop yield losses and grape quality.

Professor Steel outlines several alternative detection methods such as:

  • Imaging Technologies: Useful but limited by their inability to see inside grape bunches.
  • Enzyme Measurements: Indicative but not specific enough for precise Botrytis detection.
  • Molecular Methods: Accurate but require sophisticated equipment and expertise.
  • Immuno-Detection Lateral flow Kits: Highlighted as the most promising due to their speed, cost, specificity, and for use by growers and oenologists in the vineyard or at the pressing center.

He emphasises the need for a detection method that is rapid, accurate, and practical for use in the vineyard during critical periods in grape production. The immuno-detection lateral flow kits  can analyse samples in about ten minutes, do not require laboratory equipment or processing, and provide a reliable quantification of Botrytis. A new tool  for growers to make informed decisions during grape production, at harvest and in finished wine.
